Independent Study
What is independent study?
Independent study is a method of education where the student pursues their coursework outside of a traditional school setting. Independent study is a self-directed, one-on-one approach to learning.
Students are given the opportunity to learn at their own pace and in an environment that fits their needs best. Independent study can be used for remediation or enrichment purposes with students who have identified academic difficulties with studying in traditional classrooms.
Independent study can take place online or in-person and it’s offered by many schools, universities, and other organizations to students who want higher-level (graduate level) coursework that they may not be able to find at their school.
Independent study also prepares students well if they plan on pursuing graduate studies because it provides them with experience working independently without significant supervision from an instructor.
